Capital One just asked me if I meant to tip 144%. I love this!

Anyone who is into the credit card and travel rewards game gets a lot of email. And most emails from banks aren’t that useful.

But Capital One actually provides novel and useful notifications. And here’s one that I got yesterday that is a great example:

A bit of context on this: When my family and I arrived back in Minneapolis, we used the Priority Pass access that we get with our Venture X cards to visit the PGA lounge. One unique aspect of the PGA lounge is that it gives you a $15 voucher, usable at either the attached restaurant or its golfing simulators.

This $15 voucher will usually cover about half of an adult meal or completely cover a kid’s meal.

In our case, what was left over after our vouchers was $13.91, and I added a tip based on the total amount of the food, before tax. From Capital One’s perspective, I left a tip that was outside the norm, so they sent me an email, suggesting that I review that transaction.

While in this case, the charge was correct, I can see notifications like this being very useful if an unscrupulous server decides to throw another digit on the tip line (I’ve had this happen). Kudos to Capital One for implementing this useful feature.
