If you’re in the market for an IHG card, now is the time to get a card, but which one to get is the question.
If you’re looking to opportunistically pick up some points, go for the Traveler card, but if you stay at IHG properties frequently, go for the Premier card.
Personally, I don’t think that the marginal points you’ll get from the Premier’s sign-up bonus is worth it to pay the card’s annual fee… but if you actually book paid stays at IHG properties and want the other benefits of the card, that calculus flips pretty quickly.
It’s clear that Chase is moving to two-part bonuses on the IHG cards, where you earn part of the bonus for spending a certain amount within 3 months and then an additional bonus for continuing to use the card for spending.
Generally, I’m not a fan of these types of bonuses, but the 10-ish points per dollar that you’re going to get for the marginal $3,000 of spending on your new IHG card is definitely a better return than you’ll get for spending on non-category purchases on another card, so I guess I’m happy with that.
