Chase is running a very quick 40% bonus on transfers to Virgin Atlantic through the end of February. This is a great deal if you’re looking for SkyTeam tickets to Europe—a particular strength of Virgin Atlantic’s program.

My take: I love Virgin Atlantic. Marriott is useful at the margins.

Virgin Atlantic has been a highly useful program to me the last few years. Sure, the sweet-spot that a lot of bloggers promote has gotten nerfed… but it was vanishingly rare to find Delta One availability across the Atlantic with the program anyway.
What I have found and actually booked the last few years has included very cheap round trip flights to Europe for a family of 5 in coach for about 160k miles total, business class tickets from Kenya to the United States, and Air New Zealand business class to/from the U.S.
Although SkyTeam generally has the worse availability of any of the airline alliances, I’ve had a log of success with Virgin Atlantic’s program. (Yes Air New Zealand is OneWorld, but they are a Virgin Atlantic partner.)
A 40% transfer bonus actually has me thinking about transferring to Virgin Atlantic speculatively. For me, I’m confident enough that I’ll use the miles that I might actually do this, despite my general advice that you should never transfer your bank points to an airline speculatively.
The Marriott transfer bonus doesn’t excite me, but could be useful to some.
There are plenty who say you should never transfer Chase points to Marriott, but I’d consider the Marriott transfer bonus in two cases:
- You already have a high value award picked out. If you run the math and you’re getting more than 1 cent per point on your Marriott redemption, it might be worth it to transfer to Marriott for that specific redemption under this promotion.
- You’re topping off an award. If you only need a few thousand points to complete a redemption, it might be worth it to lose some value on a few of your Chase points to get the value out of your Marriott points. A good example of this would be if you need to add a few thousand Marriott points on top of one of the five 50,000 point certificates currently being offered by the Marriott Chase card.
