My take: How I optimize gas rewards

Aaron Hurd
Executive Editor of Cards and Points
For my family’s situation, the best choice for which card to use is pretty clear.
My plug-in hybrid needs a full tank of gas around once every six months or so, usually when I’m taking it on a road trip somewhere. Since I have the Blue Cash Preferred for its excellent rewards on groceries anyway, I usually pull out this card and fill up at whatever gas station is closest. Since I don’t really buy much gas, I don’t spend much thought optimizing on rewards.
However, my girlfriend drives the minivan, which consumes a mind-boggling amount of gas…at least for someone who has driven hybrids for most of his adult life. In our area, Costco gas prices are 40-70 cents per gallon cheaper than everywhere else, and getting 5% back on purchases at the cheapest gas station in our area is an offer that’s really hard to beat.
