Update May 2, 2024: Chase has launched a new limited-time 75k welcome offer on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card currently offers a 75,000 point new cardmember welcome offer online, and we’ve also confirmed that an 85,000 point offer is available in-branch. Here are the details:

  • If you apply online, you can earn 75,000 points after spending $4,000 on the card within the first 3 months.
  • If you apply in-branch, you can get the same 75,000 points after $4,000 of spending within 3 months and an additional 10,000 points after a total of $6,000 of spending within the first 6 months. We have personally confirmed this higher offer is available in-branch as of April 29, 2024.

Here’s what you need to know about the current Chase Sapphire Preferred new cardmember bonuses.

Best bonus: In-branch 85k Chase Sapphire Preferred® welcome offer

As of April 29, 2024, there is a new in-branch exclusive welcome bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred®. The rumor of this new bonus was reported by Doctor of Credit, but we were able to personally confirm it as of April 29th, 2024. The 85k offer is earned in two parts, broken down as follows:

  • Earn 75,000 points after you spend $4,000 in purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.
  • Earn an additional 10,000 bonus points after you spend a total of $6,000 within the first 6 months from account opening.

If you live near a Chase branch, meet with a banker to get this better offer.

For the Sapphire Reserve, a 75,000 points welcome bonus after spending $4,000 within 3 months.

Best welcome offer online: 75k Chase Sapphire Preferred® new cardmember bonus

As of May 2, 2024, there is a new welcome offer available online on the Chase Sapphire Preferred®. Frequent Miler flagged this in a post this morning. If you live near a Chase branch, you can get a better offer in-person, but this is the best offer available online. Here are the details:

Not many sites are reporting this, as it hasn’t hit the affiliate networks yet. We expect this to hit the affiliate networks later today, so rest assured that everyone will be promoting this offer soon.

Chase may send out targeted larger offers.

Within the last four months, I’ve seen posts on Reddit indicating that Chase is sending out targeted offers with higher welcome bonuses. Doctor of Credit also reported this a while back. If you’re in the market for a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, keep an eye on your mail, since people who received these offers received the via direct mail. We know of no way to trigger being targeted for the higher welcome bonus.

My take on the limited-time Sapphire Preferred® welcome bonuses

The limited-time 75k offer on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is one to jump on. We haven’t seen a better bonus on the Sapphire Preferred for over a year, and if you can get the in-branch offer, it is even better.

75,000 Ultimate Rewards® points are worth $750 of cash back, or $900 when redeemed through Chase Travel℠, and you can get even more value out of the points if you transfer them to travel partners.

If you are located near a Chase branch, it may be worth it to apply in-branch. You’ll get an extra 10k points for an additional $2,000 of spending (total $6,000 within 6 months) and make your local Chase banker happy. That said, there are plenty of additional Chase Ultimate Rewards welcome bonuses that you can get online.

Bottom line: The Chase Sapphire Preferred provides a generous welcome bonus. But get the card in branch if you can. Provided you meet the spending requirements, the 85k in-branch offer will net you 10,000 more points. This welcome bonus is included in our list of Chase Ultimate Rewards welcome bonuses and the best cash back welcome bonuses.

A few notes on applying for Chase cards

  • 5/24 rule. Chase generally won’t approve you if your credit report is showing 5 or more new credit card accounts opened in the last 24 months. This rule is knows as the 5/24 rule. If you’re unsure if you are “under 5/24” you should check your 5/24 status before applying for a Chase card. Note that recently this rule seems to have softened, especially for Ink cards. See our coverage about Chase 5/24 for more.
  • Only one Sapphire-branded card. You can only hold one Chase Sapphire-branded card at a time. This means you can have either a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or a Chase Sapphire Reserve®, but not both.
  • You can get a welcome bonus on a Chase card, even if you’ve had the card previously. How often you can earn a welcome bonus on a Chase card varies by card family.
    • Most cards allow you to earn a welcome bonus if it has been at least 24 months since your last received a welcome bonus on the same card.
    • Chase Sapphire-branded cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you can only earn a welcome bonus once every 48 months. (We published a separate article to help you determine if you can get a Sapphire welcome bonus.)
    • Marriott cards have their own special rules.
  • Chase will match an increased bonus. If you apply for a Chase card and the bank offers a higher bonus within 90 days, you can send Chase a secure message or call them to have your welcome offer matched.
  • In-branch offers are sometimes better. Chase sometimes has better credit card welcome offers in-branch than it will publish on its own website or through affiliate networks. Check all channels to make sure you’re getting the best bonus.
  • Chase business cards do not report to personal credit reports and do not impact your 5/24 status as long as they are current.

Other ways to get Ultimate Rewards® points

Getting a new Chase Sapphire Preferred® card isn’t the only way to earn Ultimate Rewards® points. Several other personal and small business cards earn Ultimate Rewards, and the Chase Ink-branded cards in particular offer incredibly generous welcome bonuses on cards with no annual fee. And Ultimate Rewards you earn on another card can be transferred to your Sapphire Preferred.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer points to airlines with the Sapphire Preferred?

Yes. If you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you can transfer points. Points can be transferred to any one of Chase’s airline or hotel transfer partners.

What is the most valuable use of Ultimate Rewards points?

You can get the most value out of your Ultimate Rewards points by using a premium credit card to redeem for travel at elevated value, or transfer to an airline or hotel partner. Not every transfer partner offers great value, so be sure that you’re redeeming for more value than you could get by booking travel directly.

Can I transfer the Ultimate Rewards points I earn with a Chase Freedom Card to airlines?

If you hold a premium Ultimate Rewards card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, or the Ink Business Premier, you can! Just transfer the Ultimate Rewards you earn on the Freedom card to your premium card and then transfer those points to airline or hotel partners.

Do I have to go into a branch to get the extra 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points offer?

Yes. The in-branch offer of 10,000 additional Ultimate Rewards points requires an in-person visit to a Chase branch bank.
