The best credit cards for gas: Up to 5% cash back on gas with no annual fee

If you are on the road frequently, you might want a credit card that offers increased rewards for purchases of gasoline. Several credit cards will give you 3% cash back or more on gas purchases with no annual fee, but in some cases you can get 4% or even 5% back on your gas purchases. Here’s our take on the best credit cards for gas purchases.

The best gas credit cards

Here’s out list of the best gas credit cards. All of these cards will give you at least 3% cash back or 3x points gas purchases. Many offer additional rewards beyond the pump.

The best credit cards for gas rewards.

My take on the best gas credit cards

When you can get cards that earn 2% anywhere, it makes sense to only look at cards that do better than that if you’re looking specifically for a gas card. And when our best cards for gas earn 5% on gas with no annual fee, it makes sense to expect cards offering 3% to offer something extra. And, of course, if a card has an annual fee, it needs to offer enough marginal rewards to offset the fee or a generous suite of additional benefits.

All of our best cards meet these criteria, and you’re likely to find the best gas card for you on our list. Personally, I use the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express for my non-Costco gas purchases. (I carry the card for its excellent grocery rewards anyway and I don’t make many gas purchases because I drive a plug-in hybrid.

Of course, the best gas card for me isn’t necessarily the best gas card for you. But the best gas card for you is likely to be on this list.

Costco members who purchase gas at Costco should get the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi. Costco only accepts Visa cards for gas purchases and this card is the only Visa card that will give you more than 3% rewards with no annual fee on gas. Of course, if you don’t have a Chase Freedom Unlimited® card, you can pick that card up and use it for 5% on your Costco gas until the promotional offer runs out. (The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is currently issued as a Visa, so you can use it at Costco.)

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is a great choice for ongoing rewards on gas and groceries. The card earns 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations, which alone isn’t enough to justify the card’s $95 annual fee. What makes the card shine is its 6% on up to $6,000 of purchases at U.S. supermarkets each year, plus the fact that it includes Amex extended warranty, purchase protection, and return protection. Plus, if you subscribe to The Disney Bundle, you can get up to $84 in statement credits annually. This is my go-to credit card for non-Costco gas purchases.

More on the best credit cards for gas

Here are some more details on our picks for the best cards for gas purchases.

Citi Custom Cash℠ Card: 5% cash back on flexible categories, including gas

The Citi Custom Cash℠ Card isn’t marketed as a gas card per se, but if you use it for gas, you can get up to 5% back on up to $500 in gas purchases monthly. If you spend less than $500 each year on gas, the Citi Custom Cash card might be your best bet. I particularly like the Citi Custom Cash℠ Card because it’s still useful even if you decide not to use it for gas. (I have the card and use it for other categories.) 5% eligible categories include Restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, select travel, select transit, select streaming services, drugstores, home improvement stores, fitness clubs, and live entertainment.

Our take on the welcome bonus: Citi doesn’t often offer an increased welcome bonus on the Custom Cash. If you do not yet have a Custom Cash card, there’s no reason to wait for an increased bonus.

The best way to use the Citi Custom Cash℠ Card is to select a bonus category and use the card primarily for that bonus category. Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi: 4% on gas for Costco members

If you are a Costco member, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi can get you 4% on up to $7,000 of gas (and electric vehicle charging) per year. This is a great reward on gas on a card with no annual fee, but your “cash back” rewards come with a catch. You’ll have to wait until after your February statement closes to get your rewards, which will be issued as a reward certificate. You can redeem your annual credit card rewards certificate at Costco.

About the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is available exclusively to Costco members. But if you carry a Costco membership, this card is a wallet staple for its increased rewards on gas, EV charging, restaurants and travel. The Costco Anywhere Visa® has no annual fee, but requires an annual Costco membership.

The card earns 4% back on eligible gas and EV charging on the first $7,000 of spending each year, plus unlimited 3% on restaurants and travel, including Costco travel. You’ll also earn 2% rewards on your other purchases from Costco and Costco.com. Notably, these rewards are in addition to the 2% rewards you can earn as a Costco executive member. Finally, the card earns 1% on all other purchases.

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card rewards are marketed as “cash back,” but redeeming them is…quirky. You’ll receive your rewards as a Costco Cash certificate after your February statement. This certificate can be redeemed for merchandise or Cash only at a Costco location.

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi doesn’t have too many other notable benefits, but it does offer Damage and Theft Purchase protection, which can cover your purchases if they are damaged or stolen within 120 days. The card notably no longer offers extended warranty coverage, though some items may receive an extended warranty through Costco Concierge Services.

If you are a small business owner, you can pick up the Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Credit Card by Citi, which offers the same cash back rewards.

U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card: 4% on a large amount of gas

Currently, if you spend a large amount of money on gas each year, no card offers more rewards on gas than the U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card. Once you spend more than $10,000 a year on the card’s bonus categories, you’ll earn enough marginal rewards to justify the card’s ongoing $95 annual fee. While you’re unlikely to spend that much on gas unless you’re managing a fleet of cars, the card does offer 4x points on travel.

The card’s benefits and rewards are changing, effective September 9, 2024. On September 9th, you’ll only earn 4x on the first $1,000 of combined gas and EV charging purchases each quarter. Plus you’ll only be able to redeem your points for 0.8 cents each toward cashback redemptions. We cover the full scope of these card changes, but the upshot is that the card becomes much less compelling for gas rewards after September.

U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card welcome bonus:

U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card: Earn 50,000 bonus points. Just spend $2,000 in the first 120 days. That’s $500 value redeemable toward cash back. $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, $95/year thereafter. Effective September 9, 2024, you will enjoy a $0 annual fee.

Our take on the welcome bonus: Recently, U.S. Bank announced changes to this card. It’s becoming a $0 annual fee card on September 9, 2024. That said, we expect the bonus to become less generous on or before that date. We know of no previous better offers on this card.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express: 3% on U.S. gas and 6% on U.S. supermarkets

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express can get you 3% at U.S. gas stations. That alone isn’t enough to justify this card’s $95 ongoing annual fee. But this card is also one of our best cards for grocery store purchases. If you have the card for its increased rewards on groceries, it’s a fine card to use for gas. 3% cash back is as good or better than you’ll get with no-annual-fee cards. This is the card that I use for gas purchases.

About the Citi Premier® Card

Citi Premier® Card card art
Citi Premier® Card

The Citi Premier® Card is a core card of the Ultimate Citi ThankYou Points Wallet. It offers generous rewards on travel spending, dining and grocery stores. While the Premier offers great rewards, it lacks many of the travel insurance protections common among travel credit cards. The Citi Premier card carries an annual fee of $95.

The Citi Premier® Card offers a long list of 3x bonus categories, including hotels purchases, air travel, restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations. Plus, until 6/30/2024, you can earn 10 total points per dollar spent on hotels, car rentals, and attractions, excluding air travel, booked through the Citi TravelSM portal. The card earns 1 point per dollar spent on other purchases. Points are earned as ThankYou Points, which can be redeemed for cash back or transferred to travel partners for additional value.

The Citi Premier® Card is notably light on the travel benefits that you might expect from a premium travel credit card; it does not include essentials like trip delay protection, auto rental collision damage waiver, or extended warranty benefits. The card does include $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more when you book through thankyou.com.

How we picked

When we create our lists of best cards, we consider a bunch of factors, including rewards rate, annual fee, caps on rewards, and how easy points are to use. We start by selecting baseline card with no annual fee that offers the highest rate of uncapped earnings available to general consumers. In the case of gas, that baseline was the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card, which earns 3x points (redeemable for cash back) on an unlimited amount of spending on gas with no annual fee.

Other cards get added to our list if they are better than our baseline card in some cases. Maybe a card with an annual fee gets you more earnings in more categories or offers compelling perks beyond the rewards. Or maybe there’s another card that caps earnings on gas, but the cap is sufficiently high that it won’t limit most peoples’ rewards and the card offers another compelling category or two.

Cards we didn’t consider include any card that earned rewards on gas with a value equivalent to less than 3% cash back. In some cases, we excluded cards that earn more than 3 points per dollar when the points couldn’t be redeemed for cash or travel rewards with an average value that met our benchmark.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best credit card for gas?

The best credit card for gas depends on your spending patterns and how you plan to use your rewards. Our list includes cards that offer up to 5% cash back on gas purchases.

Which card can I use for gas at Costco?

If you’re a Costco member, it probably comes as no surprise that the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is a great choice for its 4% rewards on up to $7,000 of gas purchases, but any Visa card can earn you rewards on gas purchases at Costco. You might consider the U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card as well. It’s a Visa card that will earn you up to 4.5% toward travel when you tap to pay at the pump.

Are prepaid cards for gas a good idea?

Prepaid cards are rarely a good idea. Prepaid cards have much less protection against fraud if your card member gets stolen. And gas pumps can be easy targets for criminals who install devices in card readers that can steal your credit card number. If you use a card at one of these compromised gas pumps, you might find your prepaid card and your gas tank drained. It’s best to stick with credit cards for gas purchases.

Is there a gas card that can be used anywhere?

All of the gas cards on the Cards and Points list of best gas cards are credit cards, which can be used anywhere credit cards are accepted. A limited number of gas stations may not accept certain types of cards. Costco, for example, only accepts Visa cards. With limited exceptions, the gas cards on our list can be used most places.
