Which Hilton credit card is right for you?

With four cards to choose from, which card is best for you? That depends on your travel patterns and preferences, and how often you plan to stay at Hilton hotels.

If you stay at Hilton just a few times a year, it makes sense to have the Hilton Honors American Express Card. The card gives you Hilton silver status, which admittedly doesn’t get you much. But will get you a 20% bonus on the points you earn on your stays, elite rollover nights, and a free bottled water. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll get access to the fifth night free benefit on award stays, which can make your point redemptions 25% more valuable.

Maybe you stay at Hilton hotels half a dozen times a year. If that’s you, you can easily get plenty of value out of the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card. The card offers a $50 quarterly bonus that offsets Hilton stays charged to the card. If you have a paid stay at a Hilton hotel a few times a year, you can easily get enough value to justify the card with this benefit alone. The card also offers a decent return on spending in most of its bonus categories. This card is also a good choice for road warriors who prefer Hilton and naturally earn Hilton Diamond status.

Luxury travelers and new road warriors who will be staying with Hilton will want to jump straight to the Hilton Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card. You’ll only get a marginal amount of additional points over the other cards, but you’re buying a lot for the card’s $550 annual fee. You’ll get immediate top-tier Diamond status which includes 100% point earning bonuses on stays, space-available room upgrades, and executive lounge access. (Unless you’re interested in luxury travel, you will want to downgrade the card if you’re earning Hilton Diamond status naturally.) The free night award can be used at most Hilton properties worldwide. Selective use of that certificate can yield more than $550 in value. If you stay at Hilton Resorts or luxury properties like Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts and Conrad Hotels & Resorts, you can get plenty of value out of the card’s included resort and on-property credits.

  • Earnings at Hilton. This is the number of points you’ll earn on purchases charged to your card directly by a hotel for stays within the Hilton portfolio.
  • Complimentary elite status. Receive Hilton Honors elite status when you hold the card. Hilton Honors elite status can mean perks like bonus points, room upgrades, lounge access and a breakfast benefit.
  • Earn elite status. Many Hilton cards allow you earn an upgraded tier of elite status after spending a certain amount of money on the card in a calendar year.
  • Free night reward annually after renewal. The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card awards a free night annually. More detail on Hilton free night awards is below.
  • Hilton credits. Some cards offer credits for Hilton stays, stays at certain luxury property brands, or on-property credits for food, beverage and activities.

A few notes on applying for American Express credit cards

Here are a few things that you should know about applying for American Express cards.

  • Amex will let you know if you’re ineligible for the welcome bonus when applying. If you don’t qualify for a welcome bonus for any reason, American Express will inform you during the application process and let you withdraw your application before they perform a “hard pull” on your credit report. If you withdraw your application, the withdrawn application will have no impact on your credit score.
  • No hard pull if they deny you. If Amex denies your credit card application, they usually won’t issue a hard pull on your credit report. This means that your credit score won’t decrease because of the denied application.
  • One bonus per card per “lifetime”. Most Amex card terms say that you’re ineligible for a welcome bonus if you’ve ever had the card before. Some targeted offers do not have this lifetime language. Readers and other blogs have reported that Amex may internally define “lifetime” as 7 years—if it’s been 7 years since you’ve had a card, you might be eligible to get a welcome bonus again.
  • Some cards allow one bonus per card “family”. Some American Express cards, like the personal Platinum card or the Charles Schwab Platinum card have language that prohibits you from earning a welcome bonus if you’ve ever had a card from the same card family before.
  • Maximum 5 Amex credit cards and 10 pay-over-time cards. You can have a maximum of 5 American Express credit cards at one time. In addition, you can hold up to 10 American Express pay-over-time cards (like the Platinum, Gold, and Green cards.) These limits are known to occasionally be flexible for some cardmembers, some of the time.
  • You might be able to get a better welcome offer than the public offer. American Express offers some customers targeted offers. See our post on how to get the best welcome offers from American Express and try those methods before applying for an American Express card. You might be able to get an elevated welcome bonus.
  • Check your application status online. You can check the status of your American Express card application online through the Amex website.
