Citi Custom Cash®: Up to 5% cash back for occasional Home Depot shoppers

Citi Custom Cash® Card

For most people, trips to Home Depot are usually associated with a home repair or maintenance project. Painting a room might require a few hundred dollars of supplies, but likely isn’t something you’re doing every day. Using your Citi Custom Cash® card can get you 5% rewards on the first $500 you spend at Home Depot each month.

Maximizing rewards. The key to maximizing the Custom Cash card’s rewards is to pick a category and use the card only in that category during the month—and then only for the first $500 you spend. Purchases in categories that aren’t your highest eligible category will only earn 1%, and any purchases beyond $500 total in your highest eligible category will only earn 1% as well.

Another upside to getting a Custom Cash card for your Home Depot purchases is that the card can get you more rewards, even when you’re not working on a home project. The card’s 5%-eligible categories include several other very usable bonus categories.

You can’t get the U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card as a new cardmember anymore, but if you already have the card, it can be a great option to use at Home Depot. And since there’s no cap on the rewards you can earn, it’s great for people who spend a lot at Home Depot.

Maximizing rewards. First, always use the card with your mobile wallet’s tap-to-pay feature in-store. Doing this will get you 3x points on every purchase. Second, redeeming your points for travel through U.S. Bank’s portal will get you 1.5 cents for each of your points. Yes, you could redeem your points for cash back, but you’ll only get 1.0 cents per point when you redeem them this way.

Additionally, you can redeem your points for statement credits through U.S. Bank Real-Time Rewards when you charge certain travel charges to your card. If you choose this option, be sure to do the math on how much value you’re getting for your redemptions—only some redemptions will give you 1.5 cents for each of your points.
