My take on the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card

I hold the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card for a very specific reason: It is my go-to card for incidental spending when I travel internationally. Yes, the card earns 1.5% rewards everywhere, but most importantly, it has no foreign transaction fee. I’ll use my hotel credit cards to pay for hotel stays, but everything else goes on the Quicksilver.

Sure, I’m missing out on some rewards because I am certain I hold a card that will earn me 3% on dining with no foreign transaction fee. But the reduced complexity of having one card (plus a hotel card) to use for all of my travel expenses is well worth it. If I’m splitting expenses, I don’t have to pick through multiple cards. All of my expenses are on one card. And if someone rips off my card number abroad, I have one card that I need to worry about.

The Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card has all of the important consumer protection benefits that I’d expect from a good no-annual-fee card and it offers 1.5% cash back everywhere. It’s a decent option if you want a single card to keep in your wallet or if you want a card to use “everywhere else”.

Who is the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card best for?

The Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card is best for the person who travels internationally and value having a card with no foreign transaction fees and no annual fee. Here’s who will benefit most from the Quicksilver:

  • International travelers. Thanks to the card having no foreign transaction fee, it’s an ideal no-annual-fee card to use for international travel. The card also has quite good travel insurance benefits for a card with no annual fee.
  • People who value extended warranty benefits. The Mastercard warranty coverage included with the card will double the warranty of eligible items, up to two additional years—a year longer than most other credit card extended warranty benefits.

Alternatives to the Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card

If you’re looking at the Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card because you like earning rewards on all of your spending, here are a few other cards to consider:

  • The Chase Freedom Unlimited® matches the Quicksilver’s 1.5% cash back rewards everywhere, but adds 3% rewards on dining and drugstores. The Freedom Unlimited will likely earn you more rewards, but the card does charge a foreign transaction fee.
  • The Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card also has no foreign transaction fee but awards 3% cash back on dining, entertainment, popular streaming services and grocery stores. If your spending tends toward these categories, this card might be a good option.
  • The TD Double Up℠ Credit Card offers a flat-rate 2% cash back on all purchases and protects purchases with extended warranty and purchase protection. You’ll pay a foreign transaction fee when you use the card abroad, but it is one of the best 2% rewards cards.

Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Card rewards

The Quicksilver Rewards card from Capital One offers unlimited 1.5% cash back rewards on every purchase. Rewards don’t expire and can be redeemed for a statement credit or a check sent to your address. Better yet, you don’t have to accumulate rewards to redeem them; you can redeem rewards in any amount, down to $0.01.

Capital One offers a number of other redemption options, but none of them offer an opportunity to get more value out of your rewards points; stick with cash back redemptions.

A few notes on applying for Capital One credit cards

  • Capital One is known to pull your credit report from all three credit bureaus, meaning that it might have a greater impact on your credit score when you apply for a card.
  • You may be able to get a new customer welcome bonus on Capital One cards more than once, but you must wait four years from receiving the welcome bonus. Cards typically have language like, “Existing or previous cardmembers are not eligible for this product if they have received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past 48 months” in the terms and conditions.
  • Capital One limits the number of cards you can have to two personal cards. Non-Capital One branded cards do not count toward this limit.
  • If you apply for a card and Capital One isn’t able to approve you for that specific card, they may consider you for an alternate version of the same card. These alternate versions of cards often offer lower (or no) welcome offers, carry higher interest rates or annual fees or offer no rewards. If Capital One offers you an alternate version of a card, be sure to check the details before proceeding with the application.
  • You can check to see if you are pre-approved for Capital One cards online with no impact to your credit score.
  • You can check your application status by calling Capital One at 1-800-903-9177. Capital One does not have a way to check your application status online.

Benefits of the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card

Capital One doesn’t readily advertise the benefits of many of its cards, but even some of its no-annual-fee cards offer a robust set of benefits that can protect the things you buy and your travels booked with the card. Terms apply to all benefits. Refer to the Guide to Benefits you receive with your card for details.

Consumer and purchase insurance benefits

Many cards offer consumer insurance benefits that can protect the things you buy. Here are the consumer insurance benefits offered by the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card. Terms and restrictions apply to all benefits.

Purchase assistance protects the things you buy with your card from damage or theft for a certain amount of time after you buy them. Capital One purchase assistance covers your new purchases for 90 days against damage or theft.

Price protection can reimburse you for the difference when you find an eligible item you purchased using your card advertised at a lower price. Capital One price protection covers purchases for 120 days from the date of purchase and allows up to 4 claims of up to $250 per claim per 12 month period.

Travel insurance benefits

Cards targeted toward travelers often offer travel insurance benefits that can protect you when you are traveling away from home. Terms and restrictions apply to all benefits.

MasterRental Coverage protects you against damage to or theft of your rental vehicle. For coverage to apply, you need to reserve and pay for your vehicle using your card and decline your car rental company’s collision damage waiver. The coverage provided by your Capital One card is secondary to your personal auto insurance.

Baggage Delay Insurance – Reimburses you for essential purchases like toiletries and clothing for baggage delays over 4 hours by your passenger carrier up to $100 a day for 3 days.

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance can reimburse you for prepaid travel expenses when your trip is canceled or interrupted for a covered reason. Capital One trip cancellation and interruption insurance covers up to $1,500 for common carrier passenger fares.

Lost luggage reimbursement offers reimbursement if your bags are lost, damaged or stolen while traveling on a common carrier. Coverage is included up to $1,500 per incident with a maximum of 2 claims per 12 month period.

Travel accident insurance pays set benefit amounts for loss of life or limb while traveling, as long as you book your common carrier tickets with your card. See your card’s Guide to Benefits for insurance coverages and amounts.
