As I predicted when the changes to the Sapphire Preferred card were announced a few days ago, Chase has increased the welcome offer on the Sapphire Preferred… and the welcome bonus on this card is even better than I expected… 100,000 points is a princely sum of Ultimate Rewards points which, I believe matches the bonus that this card offered at its launch.
Here are the details on the best current Sapphire Preferred bonus.

Quick take: Excellent bonus after a positive update

My misgivings about the devaluation of Hyatt transfers aside, the recent changes to the Sapphire Preferred card were overwhelmingly positive. For most people who aren’t hard-code travel points maximizers, the card is unarguably more valuable than it was prior to the changes.
At the time, of those changes, I predicted that Chase would offer an increased welcome offer on the card. I was thinking maybe 80,000 or even 90,000 points. I absolutely did not expect them to match the launch welcome bonus on this card. Which is exactly what they did.
Needless to say, this is an excellent bonus on this card and if you were at all thinking of getting the Sapphire Preferred, now is absolutely the time to pick up this card. And even if you were on the fence, the 100,000 points you earn earn makes the card an excellent value in your first year.
Other offers that might be available
The Sapphire Preferred sometimes has better bonus offers through different channels. Here’s what you need to know.
- In-branch offers: Chase has frequently offered a better in-branch bonus on the Sapphire Preferred—usually with an additional kicker of a few thousand points. But when we last checked, the in-branch offer matched the online offer.
- Referral offers: Historically, when Chase has had increased limited-time bonuses on this card, those stuck around for a few days through referral links after they were pulled publicly. Keep this in mind if you just missed a larger bonus on this card in the future.
Are you eligible to earn the sign-up bonus?
Chase recently changed its bonus terms on the Sapphire-branded card. Here is the exact text of the bonus terms and conditions at our last review:
This credit card is unavailable to you if you currently have one open. The new cardmember bonus may not be available to you if you previously held this card or received a new cardmember bonus for this card. We may also consider the number of cards you have opened and closed in determining your bonus eligibility.
Chase Sapphire Preferred® offer terms
Previously, Chase restricted you to holding one Sapphire-branded card and to earning one bonus across all the Sapphire cards within 48 months. But some things have changed.
You can now hold both a Sapphire Preferred and a Sapphire Reserve. This can make sense to do given the different earnings structures and credits available on these cards.
Ever having held a Sapphire Preferred card will probably prevent you from earning a bonus. But having a current or previous Sapphire Reserve card will not impact your bonus eligibility. Chase’s terms say the bonus “may not” be available to you if you’ve ever held a Sapphire Preferred card. Most likely, there will be some sort of time period after which Chase considers you to not have “ever” held a card.
